United States (US) President Donald Trump on Friday (6/27/2025) called New York’s Democratic mayoral candidate, Zohran Mamdani, a communist. Trump also considered New York could become a communist city if Mamdani wins the election in November 2025.
“I can’t believe this is happening,” Trump told reporters at the White House, as quoted by India Today.
“That’s a bad thing for this country, by the way.”
Trump’s statement followed the victory of Mamdani, a Muslim who won the New York mayoral ticket from the Democratic Party. Mamdani defeated another Democratic candidate, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, with a victory of 43.5 percent of the 90 percent of total votes counted.
The day after the results of the Democratic internal election were announced, Trump uploaded a series of statements on Truth Social ‘attacking’ Mamdani. Trump called Mamdani a “100 percent Crazy Communist” and mocked Mamdani’s appearance and intellect.
“It’s finally happened — the Democrats have gone too far,” Trump said.
“Zohran Mamdani, a 100 percent crazy Communist, just won the Democratic election and is on his way to becoming mayor. “We’ve had the Radical Left before, but now it’s getting crazier.”
Mamdani is known for his outspokenness on foreign policy, particularly his strong stance on the Palestinian cause, which has drawn criticism from pro-Israel groups. He has previously said that if Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visits New York, he will arrest him, referring to an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in November 2024.
